What is Sentence?

  • A sentence is the basic unit of language which expresses a complete thought.
  • A group of words containing a subject and a verb, that expresses a statement, a question, etc.
  • When a sentence is written it begins with a big (capital) letter and ends with a full stop.
Types Of Sentence:
  1. Assertive Sentence ( Declarative Sentence)
  2. Imperative Sentence
  3. Interrogative Sentence
  4. Exclamatory Sentence
Assertive Sentence

   An assertive sentence is a sentence that states a fact. Such sentences are simple statements. They state, assert, or declare something. They are also called declarative sentences. Assertive sentences usually end with a period or full stop.

  • Structure: Subject + Verb + Object (optional)

Examples of Assertive Sentence

  • He likes to play chess.
  •  They are singing a song.
  • The children are playing in the garden.
  • The sun rises in the east.
  • She works as a nurse in a hospital.
  • He likes to play table tennis.
  • I don’t know how to drive a car.

Imperative sentence

The sentence which is used to convey a command, a request, or a forbiddance is called an imperative sentence. This type of sentence always takes the second person (you) for the subject but most of the time the subject remains hidden.

  • Structure: (You) + Verb + Object (optional)

  • Don’t eat all the cookies.
  • Stop feeding the dog from the table.
  • Please show me your notebook.
  • Put the clothes in the sun.

Interrogative Sentence:

An interrogative sentence is a type of sentence that asks a question, as opposed to sentences that make a statement, deliver a command, or express an exclamation.

  • Structure: Question Word + Auxiliary Verb + Subject + Main Verb (+ Object)

  • What kind of music do you want to dance to?
  • How many topics do you have to study?
  • Did we make a cake for you ?
Interrogative Sentence

Exclamatory sentence

An exclamatory sentence makes a statement that conveys strong emotion or excitement.

  • Structure: (Subject) + Verb + Object (optional) + Exclamation Mark

By using assertive sentences, you convey information; imperatives enable you to give commands or make requests; interrogatives help you seek information, and exclamatory sentences allow you to express strong emotions. Recognizing and appropriately using these sentence types contribute to clear and impactful communication in both spoken and written language.
